It’s raining today where I live. Sometimes I forget to thank God for the rain. Days like today remind me when Jesus said, “[God] makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust” (Matthew 5.45). Whether we honor God or not, he still sends us blessings. Even if we don’t recognize all the good things that God sends us, he continues to give them.
Every Good and Perfect Gift
In James it says, “every good and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change” (James 1:17). Many times in life, we don’t recognize something is good right away. Something happens and doesn’t fit in with our plans, and we immediately want to label it as bad. Years later, we may finally recognize so many good things have come from what we initially thought was terrible.
God is blessing us even if we don’t realize it. God is sending us good and perfect gifts. Every day is full of these wonderful blessings from God, even if we can’t tell what they are or when they come.
All Things for Good
We have a very limited perspective on life, and we can’t always see what God is doing. God promises us that he can make everything work out for good (Romans 8:28). That doesn’t mean things will always happen the way we want them to, but it does mean God can bring good out of every situation.
Sometimes it might seem like the rain will never end. There are dark periods in our lives where we struggle to find any light. God promises even these times can be used to bring about good things. Sometimes, it’s as simple as the darkness making God’s light shine all the brighter. Sometimes bad things happen so that even greater things will be the ultimate result. We can’t know how everything will work out, but we can trust the one who made all things to bring blessings out of everything.
The Rainbow through the Rain
One of my favorite songs says, “O Joy that seekest me through pain, I cannot close my heart to the; I trace the rainbow through the rain, and feel the promise is not vain, that morning shall tearless be.” Sometimes we find ourselves in the middle of a dark rainstorm, and we can’t figure out how it’s a blessing. Sometimes we need the rain even if we don’t know it. Whether we recognize it is a blessing or not, God is the one who puts a rainbow in the sky and makes the sun to shine even brighter after the dark clouds have gone.
